New Dog Training Law in Zurich

(Effective June 1, 2025)

Starting June 1, 2025, the rules for dog training in the Canton of Zurich are changing. Here's a simple breakdown to help you understand who needs to take a course, what it includes, and when to do it

Who needs to take the new course?

There are two main situations where the new law applies:

1. You live in Zurich and your dog is between 18 weeks and 18 months old on June 1, 2025 ✔️ You must take the official training course.

2. You move to Zurich with a dog (of any age under 10 years) after June 1, 2025 ✔️ You must take the course within 12 months of moving, unless you're exempt.

What does the course include?

• Theory course: Required only if this is your first dog. You can take it online or in person, and it ends with a short test.

• 6 practice lessons: Group training sessions with your dog. These are mandatory for everyone covered by the law.

When do you have to take the course?

• You can start after June 1, 2025.

• The theory course must be done within 2 months of getting your dog, or up to 1 year before.

• The practice lessons can begin once your dog is 6 months old, and must be finished within 12 months of getting the dog or moving to Zurich.

Are there any exceptions?

Yes! You don’t need to take the course if:

• Your dog is over 10 years old at the time of adoption or moving to Zurich

• You already took a course in another canton and it’s officially accepted by Zurich’s veterinary office

• You’re a certified dog trainer

• Your dog is a recognized police, military, or herding dog, or is trained for an official working purpose

• You or your dog have health reasons that prevent participation (needs vet approval)

What happens if you don’t take the course in time?

If you miss the deadline, you could face fines or complications when registering your dog. The best way to avoid that? Start early and complete the course in time.
